RUNNING YOUR CLUB'S CANTEEN

Two Delicious Hamburgers

Did you know that your club's canteen is usually one of the strongest fundraising opportunities you have? For the entire race year , the canteen brings in a strong flow of funds each and every race day.

Taking the time to plan even the simplest of tasks will ensure your canteen will run smoothly.

At the start of the year your canteen manager should:

  • Decide on the core products they are going to sell during the year

  • The prices for those products

  • Create a running sheet for the days of operation identifying what tasks to do and when

  • A canteen roster. Identifying how many people the canteen needs, what they need to do and at what time

  • Undertake a stocktake of equipment to ensure everything is in order

The canteen manager should ensure that they work with the committee and treasurer to the goals of the club are achieved and that all financial reporting is accurate.

In New South Wales, the Food Standards Code and Food Act 2003 outlines that we must follow good hygiene and food handling practices, including proper construction and maintenance of the food premises, so that food being served is as safe as possible.

We have collated some key resources to help help club maximise its fundraising opportunities whilst ensuring you comply with required legislation in NSW.

TIME TO REVIEW YOUR GOVERNANCE FRAMEWORK?

Fully functional boards and committees are critical to the success of our KNSW Clubs.

Managing meetings, completing a role effectively or making sure your constitution is still relevant are just some of the areas covered under Governance resources.

HOW TO WIN A GRANT?

1: Focus on people, not “stuff”

Talk about the impact the project will have in the community.

2: Do your research

Demonstrate the need within the community and use demographic data to support your claim. Clearly reference evidence-based research and use it to justify your application.

3: Professionally present your club and your members

Make sure your club is presented as competent and capable of executing the proposed plan. This means your application needs to flow well and tell the amazing story of your club.

4: Use visual materials

Provide photos, use tables or insert graphics into your document. Or, attach a well-produced video or slideshow!

5: Follow the rules and address the criteria

Sounds obvious, but so many people miss this step!

INSTAGRAM FOR CLUBS

Instagram, the mobile photo-sharing network, is one of the most popular social media sites - with more than 1 billion active users.  Instagram is great for growing brand awareness.

Instagram allows you to promote your club and culture in a friendly, authentic way without directly selling.

Here are some tips for creating an Instagram account for your club.

  • Build a complete Instagram account. Choose a recognisable username and profile pic consistent with your branding. Optimize your 150 character bio and be sure to include a link to your website. Switch to Business Profile and link to your club Facebook account.

  • Invite existing contacts to follow you. Reach out to your friends, family, and existing members and clients and ask them to follow you.

  • Integrate Instagram into your other online efforts. Include an Instagram social share button on your website.

  • Share original content. Share content that resonates with your ideal personas and uses hashtags that are meaningful to them. Be sure to interact with people who engage with your content.

  • Get more followers. Make sure your username is recognizable and searchable, and optimize your profile. Post content and encourage others to share it. Follow relevant accounts, popular hashtags, and interact with interesting content.
